Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors
Cleopatra and Frankenstein was hands down my favorite book of 2022. It was a mind-exploding experience to be able to discuss this book with the author herself. Here you can find all the content on Cleopatra and Frankenstein.
Cleopatra and Frankenstein begins with a classic meet-cute scenario: two strangers coincidentally crossing paths in an elevator while attempting to flee an early New Year's Eve gathering. Cleo, a troubled yet captivating young artist from England, faces the imminent expiration of her student visa, leaving her with limited time in New York City. On the other hand, Frank, in his forties, has established a thriving advertising agency from scratch. Instantly drawn to each other, they embark on a whirlwind romance and tie the knot within a few months.
Although this may initially appear as the conventional tale of a young woman dating an older, wealthier man, Mellors' distinctive narrative style introduces a fresh perspective. Cleo and Frank's relationship becomes the central thread that weaves through the lives of those around them, affecting their friends and family. Essentially, it is a love story, but one seen through the eyes of others.
The book masterfully captures the complexities and messiness of modern relationships, particularly when the initial excitement fades and reality takes hold. Mellors' exploration of relationships feels remarkably contemporary, reflecting the fragmented world we inhabit, where choices abound and chaos reigns. Amidst such uncertainty, it becomes increasingly challenging to discern one's true desires and unravel the enigmatic concept of "true happiness" that eludes everyone's grasp.
While the narrative jumps between a diverse cast of characters bustling through the streets of New York, each one is intricately developed, with their perspectives holding equal allure. The story interlaces witty humor throughout, complementing its tender and painfully realistic examination of the characters. Moreover, the book delves into profound explorations of love, marriage, desire, friendship, art, addiction, and mental illness. Ultimately, it seems to revolve around the perpetual journey of self-discovery, the quest to uncover one's authentic identity and deepest longings—a journey that remains forever elusive.
