PUBLICATION 6 - Monsters in the mind

In the stillness as the dust begins to settle, Yearning for acceptance, understanding the incomprehensible. Rejections strike with thunderous force, Leaving you lost, unsure who to endorse. Who to turn to who isn’t flakey? In this sea of faces, who's genuine or a liability? Perhaps that's the irony you must face, Once the choices were yours, now you’re in an empty space. In the dark you search for a hand to grasp But there is no hand in sight, too much to ask It's an ongoing battle, fight or flight, Doors shut, windows cracked open ‘You are in but keep your distance’ ‘You are one of us but downplay your existence’ They say, "Expect nothing to avoid dismay," But that notion feels hollow For what's the beauty in a life so tame, With a thousand disappointments but no expectation's flame? Inhabiting an empty shell without a meal To giggle, laugh and root for success It’s mostly at a comfortable distance Probably for them a total bliss Yet, who's to blame when loneliness persists, Monsters in the mind make it seem impossible to find the reality that is true But deep down you know the problem is you Yearning for what's deemed normal, not strange, An absence of abnormality, the desire for a change. To entwine bodies in laughter, A number on speed dial Spontaneous knocks on the door and visits to the bottom of shared bottles of wine Important to realise that one day you will be fine.
